‘Light in the Water’… can offer a variety of interpretations… including portraying access to the incredible beauty of our underwater world that opens to a diver carrying a light or to a photographer using a strobe. Then there is the metaphysical thought that the ‘light’ in the water can be a metaphor for ‘life’. ‘Light in the Water’ has been a work in progress, at least in my mind, for many, many years. I am pleased that it is finally in tangible form and hope that it is and will be enjoyed by everyone for years to come.
I struggled with the title probably more so than necessary, finally selecting it one early evening sipping an adult beverage with Barbara on a lanai in Hawaii. It can offer a variety of interpretations… including portraying access to the incredible beauty of our underwater world that opens to a diver carrying a light or to a photographer using a strobe. Then there is the metaphysical thought that the ‘light’ in the water can be a metaphor for ‘life’. Either way I sincerely hope you have as much fun browsing through ‘Light in the Water ‘ as I had creating and producing it.
Shoulders of the Gods… The Magic of Mountains… realistically has been a work in progress most of my life. I grew up in the California Sierra and when not at or in the ocean… my time is spent in the mountains. So this work truly is a life long labour of love. I live on the flank of the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia, Canada, where incredible scenery is literally just outside the door. Some of these photographs were taken less than five minutes from our house… some right off the porch! Indeed I am a lucky fellow.

Historians generally consider the year 1890 as the close of the American Frontier. By then most of the western United States had been settled, ranches and farms developed, communities established, and roads and railroads constructed. The mining boomtowns like Virginia City built on the lure of overnight riches were mostly but a memory. But then there was the rest of Nevada. The great mining booms at Tonopah…1900, Goldfield…1902 and Rhyolite…1904 were truly the last blossoming of the Old West.
SEA JEWELS by Rick Tegeler
Hardcover (dustjacket) $109.39, (imagewrap) $112.39
SEA JEWELS is the culmination of an enterprise I have been planning for nearly 45 years… a true labour of love that I have wanted to achieve and complete almost from the first time I journeyed underwater with a camera. The primary reason SEA JEWELS has taken so long in process is because I could never quite decide on the subject matter… there are so many worthy species from which to choose. Invertebrates make up over 97% of all living species in the world and are critically important as a primary basis for most food chains and therefore are a paramount link to human survival. No one is exactly sure of the number of invertebrates existing in the oceans.
There are around 170,000 that have actually been described, but there are probably anywhere from perhaps several hundred thousand up to maybe ten million yet to be discovered. Obviously, our underwater world is a vast universe of opportunity and one can understand the difficulty in selecting but three from such a daunting array of possibilities. Facing the potential winding down of a very long diving career I have chosen crinoids, nudibranchs and soft coral… not because they are more worthy subjects than a variety of other species… but because the desire to get to print demanded I stop procrastinating and finally make a decision.
